Windows 7 installation: Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver For Windows

This article was published 7 years ago. Due to the rapidly evolving world of technology, some concepts may no longer be applicable.

I bought a wireless gaming receiver for my XBox 360 controller this week, so I can use it to play compatible games on steam. (If anyone wondering, it was one of these)

Whilst it’s a cheap knock-off, it works just fine so long as you know how to install it. Thankfully I read the comments first and didn’t even attempt to use the supplied CD. I’m reproducing the comment here just incase I ever need to reinstall it in future and can’t find the comment.

Firstly, download the drivers – thanks Random Stranger (old link) and install them. Then:

  1. Right click on Computer
  2. Go to Properties
  3. Click on Device Manager
  4. Right click on the Unidentified Device
  5. Go to Properties
  6. Go to the Drive tab
  7. Click on Update Driver…
  8. Browse my computer for driver software
  9. Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
  10. Windows Common Controller for Window Class
  11. Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version:
  12. Update Driver Warning
  13. Click Yes

All done. Press the button on the receiver and press the pair button on your controller

Thanks for putting these out there, I always reinstall Windows and need this but forget to bookmark >_<
And what a blessing this site is to look at, so pretty and minimal ^_^

Just thought I'd provide a bit more specificity on the matter. It's all good up to Step 10. It should be:

10. Select "Show All Devices" and click next

11. In the manufacturer column, find and select "Microsoft" (Do not select Microsoft Corporation)

12. In the righthand column find and select "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows"

Then back to the original Step 12 and 13.

Thanks again, please keep this post up. It's top on Google results :)

Don’t forget to pair with the receiver using the small button on the top left of the Xbox controller as well.
Been a long time since I originally paired it with my Xbox but you need to do it each time.

Thank you, worked perfectly, the manual that comes with the wireless controller is really outdated and useless!!!

Thank you so much! It also works if you use the xbox wireless controller software you can get from the microsoft website, if you have trouble with the link. Thanks man I needed my controller to play Mugen! I was tearing out my hair over this because I lost the installation disc! Thanks so much!

It works just fine.
7 years later, it’s still the same principle.
And it works even on Windows 10.
